On the Hunt! Job Search Tips for BFA’s

Graduating seniors this one is for you! Here are a few tips on how to hunt down your career.

Know someone on the inside.

Sick of hearing that you have to know someone to get a chance at an opportunity? Well it turns out it most certainly helps. How else do you plan to distinguish yourself, as an entry-level candidate, from the dozens of other resumes?  Knowing a face to accompany the resume gives you an enormous advantage.

  • If it’s a public business, organization or institution, frequent the space and attend the organization’s events. Be sure to introduce yourself to the staff. Let them know you are seeking opportunities with their organization.
  • Request an informational interview with the open position’s supervisor or their supervisor. Informational interviews can happen even if their isn’t an opportunity available at the time. Let them know you are someone to consider if something becomes available in the future.
  • Deliver your resume in person, but be sure to look professional when you do.

Be prepared to sell yourself.

  • No matter what your profession, role or industry, you’re a marketer and a sales pro during the job search. You need to understand each job and company you’re targeting and be able to sell your ability to be successful in that role. Visit their site, find out what they are doing and who is already on staff.

Courtesy is Key.

  • Have you had an interview? Have you had a second interview? Still waiting to hear back? Write a thank you note for the interviewing staff’s time. Who doesn’t like a nice letter? It’s a simple gesture that definitely sticks.  Remind them about your enthusiasm for the job and to always keep you in mind if they select another candidate.

Try try again.

  • So maybe you got an interview but not the job? Sometimes you never hear anything. Bummer. Well cheer up, at least they now know a little more about you and will possibly remember you the next time something becomes available. It’s still a good time to write a note if you think you will continue to pursue a position with that particular organization. Who knows, the staff may leave and end up someplace you will approach in the future.

Where to look online.

  • Since I am interested in working in administration, especially with a not-for-profit, I frequently visit npconnect.org to see all non-profit organization listings in the Kansas City area.
  • Always remember to check out KCAI’s employment page. You have already jumped through the biggest hoop (knowing people on the inside) by attending the program. KCAI has a great track record of employing its alumni.

Current postings online for creatives:

Kansas City

Assistant conservator in photography at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art

Bemis Center Internship Program

At the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, we have one mission: to support exceptional talent. And one of the ways we accomplish this is by providing talented, motivated interns with the singular opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of the contemporary art world from the perspective of an industry insider. From learning how to install an exhibition to working one-on-one with artists from all over the world, you will learn about how an internationally recognized non-profit arts facility functions on a daily basis. As a Bemis Center intern, you can cultivate a wide-range of professional skills, including:

  • Develop non-profit administration skills
  • Take part in the daily operations of a non-profit institution
  • Learn how to prepare galleries for exhibitions and special events
  • Assist staff members in their specialized areas, including the Artist-in-Residency Program, Community Outreach, Exhibition Program, Community Arts Program, Marketing & Media, as well as Art Sales & Inventory
  • Working with the public in a dynamic art setting
  • Working along-side some of the contemporary art world’s most creative artists and curators

Plus, internships provide ideal exposure to the contemporary art world through functions such as ArtTalks, Gallery Talks, Opening Receptions and visits to Artist-in-Residence studios.

What kinds of qualifications do you need? A passion for contemporary art, self-motivation, attention to detail, eagerness to learn, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of basic PC skills (Windows, Word, Photoshop, Excel, etc.) and the basic skills necessary for your specific intern position.

Bemis Center internships are competitive and typically last one university semester. They are structured as unpaid, volunteer positions. While most universities offer college credit for participating in the Bemis Center’s Internship Program, it is the intern’s responsibility to arrange this with his or her academic institution.

Be sure to stop by Career Services if you are interested in a summer internship or need assistance with your application!

Emergency Grants

If you find yourself with an art opportunity that suddenly puts you between a rock and hard place, don’t fear, emergency grants are here!

(ARTISTS & PERFORMING ARTISTS) Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grants—Created in 1993, Emergency Grants provides speedy funding for visual and performing artists who have unanticipated, sudden opportunities to present their work to the public, or who incur unexpected or unbudgeted expenses for projects close to completion with committed exhibition or performance dates. The grants are intended to support the creation of innovative and experimental work, and are meant to assist individuals and groups when there is insufficient time to seek other sources of funding.

Requests are primarily granted to artists who are “emerging” and have few sources of financial support. Emergency Grants is the only active, multi-disciplinary program that offers immediate assistance of this kind to artists working anywhere in the United States.

Emergency Grants applications are accepted year round; there is no deadline. There is no application form; please check the website for application requirements. Grants are determined on a monthly basis by the Emergency Grants Panel, a volunteer committee of established artists. In 2010, grants ranged in amount from $200 to $2,000; the average grant was $900.

Special funds for travel to Asia, Central Europe and Eastern Europe:

In addition to providing support for artists with immediate needs related to performing and exhibition opportunities, FCA has special funds forlast-minute or unexpected travel or other expenses for US-based artists presenting work throughout Asia, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. Such requests must meet general Emergency Grants program guidelines in order to be eligible.
