There are many opportunities and organizations that support creatives, like you, in Kansas City, but the KCAI Case Study knows that our alumni go on to have wildly successful careers in other cities. The KCAI CASE Study introduces a new blog post: FOLKS YOU SHOULD KNOW. These posts will introduce you to organizations you should be familiar with now and when you spread your wings and migrate to new communities. The KCAI CASE STUDY just returned from an informative gathering of all the AICAD schools (Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design) for the career services and alumni conference. More on them shortly, but while we were on the east coast we made a visit to the Dumbo neighborhood in Brooklyn to see the NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts) and meet with our new friend, Eleanor Whitney, the Program Officer, New York Foundation for the Arts.

Some students my remember Eleanor when she visited KCAI in the spring to present on NYFA resources for artists across the nation. She manages Artspire, NYFA’s fiscal sponsorship program. What is fiscal sponsorship?  It gives individual artists and artist run organizations greater access to greater funding and increases their fundraising capabilities. Fiscal sponsorship enables individual artists and nonprofit organizations without their 501(c)(3) status to raise tax-deductible funds using Artspire’s charitable status. THIS IS NOT a way to fund your small art projects, but say someday you want to manage a non-profit gallery focusing on women in the arts or an organization that promotes arts education, this would be a helpful way to raise support and provide your funders with a tax deduction. Artspire is the largest and most established in the country and helps artists and organizations raise and manage over $3 million annually. Take a minute to look at their site. They have additional support and resources on the Artspire site about fundraising.

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) was founded in 1971 to empower artists at critical stages in their creative lives. Each year they provide approximately $1 million in cash grants to individuals and small organizations. NYFA has a classified section from coast to coast that is updated everyday.  NYFA Source is their online directory of national grants, awards and opportunity deadlines. You can search by discipline, region or deadline. NYFA can help you find information on Emergency Grants, health insurance or legal issues on their Disaster Resources page

photo (67)

NYFA also provides learning programs to thousands of artists with professional development training.  Their leaning programs include workshops, one-on-one consultations with curators and arts professionals call “doctor’s hours”, and advice for international students hoping to continue their career in the states.

photo (68)

The KCAI/ AICAD studio exchange summer program is located in the SAME BUILDING as the NYFA offices. Such a small world we live in!

Should you decide to me to New York City or New York, NYFA also provides a New York Artist Fellowship. This year’s fellow’s work is currently being exhibited in the NYFA offices. Check out this selfie with work by 2013 fellow, Karolina Sobecka, the piece tracks the viewers movements and mimics them in the animated animal’s expression.

If you are looking for some summer reading recommendations we encourage you to take a look at NYFA’s book The Profitable Artists and Eleanor Whitney’s newly released book Grow.  Eleanor will return to KCAI via Skype to present tools for fundraising at Professional Practice, January 30, 2014, a new feature to the Pro Prac program. Take some time to check out NYFA’s site and stay tuned for more info on Folks You Should Know!

Artist Crowdfunding Resources: USA Projects and Artspire

I attended the Alliance of Artist Communities Annual Conference earlier this month.  Residency administrators, artists, and supportive communities congregated  in Kansas City for a few days of discussion and tours. I was able organize an open house at my Urban Culture Project studio for the conference attendees, and network with organizations that provide innovative models for supporting artists.I wanted to share the details about two programs available to students seeking funds.

Katherine DeShaw, Executive Director for United States Artists, Los Angeles, CA, spoke about USA Projects. United States Artists provides an annual unrestricted cash grant of $50k to 50 artists every year. A new addition to their program includes Crowdfunding, specifically for artists projects. Here are the details of why it’s different from KickStarter and other Crowdfunding models.

USA Projects, Not for Profit, Funds artist projects only, STUDENTS QUALIFY!

  • No rewards required
  • Offers Fiscal Sponsorship: Your donors receive a tax write off!
  • Higher rates of pledges by donors because of the Fiscal Sponsorship: Most donations are at the $120 level.
  • USA Projects will match up to 5% of the funds raised!
  • Offers online guidance with your project!
  • Must submit a final report before you can create another project.

Eleanor Whitney from the New York Foundation for the Arts introduced conference attendees to Artspire, NYFA’s Crowdfunding site. Eleanor was scheduled to give a similar presentation at KCAI, but was unable to make it to Kansas City because of Super Storm Sandy. She was however, able to give her presentation at the conference via Skype! If you are not familiar with NYFA YOU SHOULD VISIT THEIR SITE. NYFA provides professional development guidance, national opportunities and job listings for artists as well as grants for artists living in New York. Artspire is geared towards large artist projects and art organizations.

Artspire, Not for Profit, Funds artist projects only, STUDENTS QUALIFY!

  • Offers Fiscal Sponsorship: You donors receive a tax write off!
  • Deadlines to apply: June 30, September 30, December 31, and March 31
  • Artist projects and emerging organizations must have a minimum budget of $15,000
  • If accepted, Artspire charges an 8% administrative fee, $100 contract fee, and a $50 annual renewal fee
