Last chance deadlines (next two weeks):

  • Playa (Summer Lake, OR) is now accepting applications for Spring (Extended) 2014 Fellowship Residencies, running from April 21-June 13, 2014. Artists, writers, natural scientists, naturalists, and others engaged in creative or interdisciplinary work are encouraged to apply. Fellowship Residencies include housing, work or studio space, and one group dinner a week at no cost. Read more. Deadline: Dec 30

  • Sculpture Space (Utica, NY) is located in the former Utica Steam Engine and Boilerworks plant. Sculpture Space artists-in-residence receive a $2,000 stipend, shared housing/studio space, equipment, technical assistance, and specialized resources. Read more. Deadline: Dec 31

We have added the following opportunities to the database this month:

  • Cow House Studios Visiting Artist Program (Wexford, Ireland) Visiting artists are invited to live and work at Cow House Studios for ten weeks each summer. Artists teach and facilitate the Studio’s teen program: Art on the Farm. Positions are unpaid but provide a fantastic opportunity to travel to Ireland, live on a working family farm, work with young people, and make work in a unique environment. All expenses, including room, board and travel are covered for the duration of the program. Deadline: Jan 10
  • Santa Fe Art Institute (Santa Fe, NM) is now accepting applications for their first thematic residency focusing on food justice.  SFAI invites creative minds to come together and examine the territory of food justice. Together we will ask: How can we use diverse creative practices to confront inherent social, cultural and economic problems in our food system? How can we bring together insights from creative fields, environmental sciences, sustainable agriculture, critical theory, and food studies to have a local, national and international impact? Read more. Deadline: Jan 15
  • The Banff Artist in Residence (BAIR) Spring Program (Alberta, Canada) in Visual Arts provides time and space for individuals and groups to create new works, research innovative ideas, and experiment with different techniques and modes of production. Participants are provided with an individual studio accessible 24-hours a day, as well as use of Visual Arts facilities including printmaking, papermaking,, sculpture, and photography.Read more. Deadline: Jan 8

  • Green Olive Arts an international art studio and urban art residency in Tetouan, Morocco. Open to artists at all levels and of all disciplines, Green Olive Arts offers fully equipped production spaces, and opportunities for interaction and collaboration with other local and international artists. Spouses and children of artists welcome for full stay.
  • Norfolk Writers’ and Artists Retreat (Norfolk, CT) A writers and artists retreat on the village green in the Litchfield Hills – listed in the National Registry of Historic Houses with a tradition of hospitality as a former inn.
  • Residence@95 (Providence, RI) at AS220 showcases diverse performance in New England by offering a 90-seat black box theatre to artists who wish to explore, create, and present exclusively new, original, or seldom-produced theatrical works. Dancers, solo artists, hybrid performance-makers, theatre companies, performance collectives, and anyone who needs space and time to put their work in front of an audience is welcome to apply.

Alliance of Artist Communities Residency Deadlines | December 2013 & January 2014

Below is a list of residency programs and special opportunities with December/January deadlines. You can find information on hundreds of programs as well as tips for researching and applying for residencies at: www.artistcommunities.org.

  • Grin City Collective Spring Artist Residency offers artists at all stages two to six week residencies focused on art-making and community work. Residents follow their own creative pursuits while also participating in social outreach projects – from farming on-site gardens to assisting in after school arts programs. Residents work together as a team on all projects and receive studio space, housing, and a collaborative working atmosphere. Residents pay $100 per week of stay and are responsible for their own meals. Read more. (Deadline: November 30).
  • The Mesa Refuge: Located on the misty bluffs of Tomales Bay near Point Reyes Station, California, the Mesa Refuge is one of the few retreats in the United States that supports progressive and environmental writers. Emerging and established essayists, journalists, economists, naturalists, screenwriters and authors of memoirs are invited to apply for the two week residencies. Spacious lodging overlooking the bay and most dinners included at no cost. Read more. (Deadline: December 2)
  • Pilchuck Glass School Emerging-Artist-in-Residence (EAiR) Programserves promising younger artists who have had previous experience working with glass. Six artists are selected from applicants worldwide to receive a $1,000 stipend, lodging, and access to studios for two months each fall. Readmore. (Deadline: January 15)
  • The Walt Whitman Award brings first-book publication, a cash prize of $5,000, and a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center to an American who has never before published a book of poetry. The winning manuscript, chosen by an eminent poet, is published by Louisiana State University Press. Readmore. (Deadline: December 1).

Residency Deadlines for November and December 2013

  • Bunnell Street Arts Center‘s Old Town Artist In Residence (Homer, AK) program seeks visiting artists from Alaska and the United States to galvanize the community around Homer’s Old Town neighborhood through the creation and presentation of artwork that activates the Arts Center’s space and surrounding outdoor neighborhood sites. The one month residency allows teams of artists to develop artist-led projects focused on community engagement through murals, poetry, new media, landscape design, music, ephemeral art, dance, painting, theater, installation, creative writing, or sculpture. The one-month program includes a $3000 stipend, up to $1000 in project costs, round-trip travel, and lodging. Read more. (Deadline: December 1)
  • TRANSIT (Chicago, IL) has announced the first call for applications for their printmaking residency program  in partnership with the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. The residency will offer Chicago-based letterpress printers or book artists the chance to spend 2-3 weeks working with museum’s collection in Two Rivers, WI. The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production and printing of wood type – with 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns, Hamilton’s collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world.   • The Rockefeller Foundation – Bellagio Arts & Literary Arts Residency(Bellagio, Italy) is an opportunity for composers, fiction and non-fiction writers, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers, multi-media and visual artists seeking time for disciplined work, reflection, and collegial engagement, uninterrupted by the usual professional and personal demands. The Center offers one-month stays for three to five artists at a time, in a diverse community of resident fellows from fields that include the natural sciences, social scientists, as well as political and non-profit organization leaders. Artists of significant achievement from any country are welcome to apply. The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center is located on a peninsula in the middle of Lake of Como, in northern Italy. Alliance of Artists Communities Deadlines for August and September

Below is a list of August/September residency deadlines.

  • 360 Xochi Quetzal (Chalapa, Mexico) – Named for the Aztec goddess of creativity and fertility and protector of artisans, 360 Xochi Quetzal is a fully-funded artist residency located in Chapala, Jalisco on the shores of the largest lake in Mexico. Visual and fiber artists, musicians, scholars and writers are encouraged to apply. Read more here. (Deadline: August 17th)
  • Elsewhere Studios (Paonia, CO) and the Western Slope Conservation Center are looking for an artist to create an installation alongside Paonia River Park during June/July of 2014. The River Park is located next to a large concrete yard cut off by an uninviting chain link fence. The installation will embellish the fence, enlivening the space and creating an engaging border for visitors. The River Park Resident’ will be awarded a $500/month stipend to cover general living expenses as well as a materials budget (secured through the Conservation Center’s fundraising efforts).   • N & G Global Exchange Center (Beijing, China) is now accepting applications for 2013 fall residencies in China. Residencies are hosted by the N & G Global Exchange Center – an art consulting and publishing center focused on helping artists from all over the world break language and cultural barriers to reach Chinese audiences. Visual artists – including painters, sculptors, photographers – from countries outside of China are encouraged to apply. The program includes studio space in Beijing, travel stipend, language and visa support services, exchange with local artists and gallery representation. Read morehere. (Deadline: August 31st)
  • The Rensing Center (Pickens, SC) – Located on 28 acres in the rolling rural hills of beautiful southern Appalachia, the Rensing Center connects Creative, Environmental, and Economic ideas and disciplines through their Artists in Residence program. Artists may apply for 1 week to 6 month residencies, in music, painting, metal, wood, photography, poetry, playwriting and environmental studies. Living and workspaces are provided for self-motivated applicants seeking an isolated rural, creative landscape, which fosters interconnections, inspiration and information. ALLIANCE OF ARTISTS COMMUNITIES RESIDENCY DEADLINES FOR JUNE AND JULY

Below is a list of June/July residency deadlines.In addition, we have added the following programs and opportunities to the Residency Directory:

  • Centre d’art marnay art centre (CAMAC) is now accepting applications for two month residencies funded through Fondation Ténot. Three residencies will be awarded this year to one visual artist, one writer and one musician or composer.CAMAC is located 60 minutes away from Paris in the village of Marnay sur Seine, as a multi-disciplinary creative centre it offers a unique environment for visual artist, writers or musicians. Residency includes return ticket, private lodging and meals, as well as an individual studio. The fellow must provide his/her own visas and health insurance. Read more here.  (Deadline: June 30)
  • Due to last minute cancellation, one space is available for the month of June atElsewhere Studios in Paonia, CO. Unique and supportive environment in small town nestled in a beautiful landscape of mountains and mesas covered with orchards, small ranches, and farms on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains. Visual artists, writers, musicians, and performance artists are welcome. Shared studio space as well as ceramics and woodworking shop on site. Residency fee $500 which includes utilities and WiFi.   • The Lanesboro Residency Program (Lanesboro, MN) provides an opportunity for emerging artists to create work and explore new ideas while engaging with the community through their artwork.  Lanesboro has hosted 37 Residency artists between 2001 and 2013, ranging from writers to painters to videographers to musicians to puppet theater artists.  Residencies are two to four weeks, and include a generous artist stipend, most meals and fully furnished artist loft.   • N & G Global Exchange Center (Beijing, China): Located in a dynamic cultural center, the N & G Global Exchange Center Residency invites visual artists from all over the world to exchange ideas and experience Chinese cultures. The residency offers diverse opportunities to connect to the everyday life of local citizens and with the Chinese art community and art enthusiasts. Artists are provided with studio space and accommodations and connected with a network of artists residence programs in Shanghai, Yantai and other parts of China. Read more here. (Deadline: Ongoing) 
  • Mesa Refuge (Point Reyes Station, CA): Set on the dramatic bluffs overlooking Tomales Bay, the Mesa Refuge provides fully-funded, two to four-week residencies to essayists, journalists, economists, naturalists, screenwriters writing about nature, economics and social equity. Each residency is an opportunity to develop ideas and projects so that they may be published and transformed into practice. Private room/workspace provided as well as evening meals. Alliance of Artists Communities Residency Deadlines for May and June

  • Avaloch Farm Music Institute (Boscawen, NH) is extending their deadline for fall residencies to June 15th. The Institute hosts chamber music ensembles at all stages of development, giving time and an insulated environment where groups can work on repertoire, prepare for recordings, concerts, and competitions, and “forge or reconnect to their musical identity”. There is currently room for two to three more groups to take part in the inaugural residency (September & October). Read more.
  • Boston Center for the Arts (Boston, MA) The Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) Artist Residency Program aims to provide an environment where artists can experiment with their craft, develop their focus or test new ideas and simultaneously engage in public dialogue.  This fifteen-week, process-oriented residency is awarded to two individual artists per year (no groups or collaborative pairs). Through a series of community programs jointly developed by the artist and the BCA, the program allows artists to connect to the public and explore themes that inform their residency project. Read more.
  • BAU Institute (Ontranto, Italy) encourages visual artists, architects, filmmakers, writers, performing artists, curators, sound artists, and composers to apply for twelve spots offered this year as part of the 2013 summer residency program. From June 1-30, BAU Institute artist fellows will live and work within the walled city by the sea – known for its legendary light and architecture- and are given studios in the legendary Castle of Otranto.  Meetings are scheduled with visiting critics and public exhibition space can be arranged. In addition, fellows enjoy artisanal cuisine and guided excursions with a support staff. Deadline: May 1st.  Read more.
  • Torpedo Factory Art Center (Alexandria, VA) The Torpedo Factory Art Center Visiting Artist Program serves emerging and experienced visual artists through one, two, or three-month summer residencies (June, July, August). This is a self-directed, creative residency, with opportunities for informal collegial exchanges with Center’s 165 resident artists and over 1000 members.  As part of the program, each Visiting Artist gives a demonstration, elaborating on his/her work and has the opportunity to display and sell original artwork. Read more.
  • Norfolk Writers & Artists Retreat (Norfolk, CT) A writers and artists retreat on the village green in the Litchfield Hills. This colonial built in 1795 offers a quiet escape and tranquility with dedicated workshops in fiction and non fiction writing, poetry, painting, drawing, photography, graphic design, gourmet cooking, and other specialties. The retreat offers space for creative exploration and quiet respite, with all the comfort and hospitality of a former inn.Deadline: Rolling. Read more.
